Bringing back the 1920s, Gatsby ishtyle!
A recent farewell bash saw a unique Great Gatsby to Grammys' theme.
Chennai’s couture scene may not be quite up there with the likes of Mumbai and Delhi just yet. But our city teens are more than game to up the ante — and how! A recent college farewell party was the perfect testimony to this burgeoning trend when the students went all out to bring a ‘Great Gatsby to Grammys’ theme alive!
Held at a swanky space in a posh area of town, this private all-girls party saw everyone channel their inner Daisy Buchanan and Rihanna, as the glitzy decor helped to create the atmosphere of a throwback era. Says Viscom student Tanitha Pereira, who’s also a fashion blogger, “It was this terrific idea our juniors had while planning our farewell — and it ended up becoming one huge party with the entire department turning up; around a 100 girls! I especially went out of my way to dress up for the occasion — found the perfect accessories, a shiny dress that matched the theme, an old beautiful turban that belonged to my grandma (with a feather on it), and a pearl necklace to top it off. I just couldn’t find an old cigarette lighter to complete the look!”
She says the whole vintage prom-like setting added to the allure and fun. “Those were the days! Everyone’s wardrobe was so elegant and classy... as compared to today, when dressing up just means ‘being sexy’. We girls were in our element and pretty much cut loose, dancing the night away,” Tanitha grins. Nivedita Jai Shankar, who took inspiration from a Grammys trend for her dress, says that the best part of the occasion was that there were no kiddish games like most farewells have — “Thankfully, the whole point of the party was to interact and dance. The ones with the best fashion ensemble were recognised though, which was fun.” Baz Luhrmann, fancy shooting for your next film in Chennai yet?
