Don't take a rain check on this!
Makeup artists and models talk about the highs and lows when it comes to waterproof makeup.
Unexpected rain or even light showers can spoil facial makeup, when one is about town. The first thought that comes to mind for coping with painful bleeding makeup is ‘waterproof’. With the hype surrounding this trend, here is what experts say about this trend that Chennaiites are falling for, during these rainy days!
Says Suresh Menon, a freelance makeup artist and stylist, “Waterproof foundation is a must, when it comes to heading out on a rainy day. It is known for its prolonged presence after application, and is best for travellers and airhostesses. He adds, “Another important aspect is that, we must use a good remover to remove the makeup, as it doesn’t come off as easily as normal products do. Specialised removers are mandatory for waterproof makeup.”
Experts say that before using this type of makeup, it is necessary to undergo a waterproof makeup primer. After its removal, it is necessary to follow the routine of cleansing and moisturising to prevent the eruption of pimples. Samantha Jagan, a celebrity makeover artist, says that the minimalist look is key to looking glam for monsoon. “When opting for waterproof eye shadows, it is better to stick to natural and light colours. Further, cream blush helps to create a dewy effect,” she says “As far as the comfort level of the waterproof products is concerned, it is quick in application, but it is necessary to be precise while using it for the first time. It is easy to be used just like the other products. It’s not that waterproof makeup cannot be washed away at all — but it doesn’t get smudged easily, nor can it be washed easily,” Samantha muses.
Pradaini Surva, a model, says its best to avoid any kind of foundation while stepping out into the rain or a pool, “Waterproof mascara and subtly-coloured lip balms are the best options. When it comes to eyebrows, you can use a brow-set gel that doesn’t come off easily.”
However, according to model Sindhoori, waterproof makeup is not very useful because it is hard to wipe away. It’s a big no-no for people who don’t like to wear makeup for prolonged hours. “Waterproof makeup is not good for everyday use. If you are going for an underwater shoot then it’s fine, otherwise it’s best to avoid it. The good news is that this does not require a lot of touch-up during outdoor shoots,” she says, adding, “Skin is prone to damage if waterproof makeup is used on a regular basis.”
Meanwhile Gayathri, a model, has her point of view — “While removing waterproof makeup, it is best to use baby oil or coconut oil instead of remover. That will help prevent damage to super-sensitive skin.”
