It was European and British women of the 16th century who were responsible for the bustiers gaining popularity in that era. With  fashion anything is possible. Trends that were popular back then can still rule the charts now. The good old bustier has made its way on to our runways and designers have experimented with this trend by pairing it with lehengas and flared trousers.

Fashion is an ever transforming industry where trends come and go. “The entire concept of bustiers came from the regal era where noble women sported them. And since we are known to be highly influenced by the West, the trend made it on to our runways. These days women are all about contemporary and fusion wear,” opines designer Riya Kodali. To pull off a bustier needs a lot of attitude.

Desginer Ranjeeta Sundar adds, “A bustier gives out the illusion of a perfect hourglass silhouette. With the bustier, one can play with prints and colours by mixing and matching light and dark shades.” Minimal is the way to pull off the trend without looking over the top. Designer Deepta Ragunath adds, “This trend is best when one is not too heavy because a bustier would only enhance it. Else it would be best to team it with a cape coat or a shrug along with the bustier.”

Since this trend is so heavy on the eye, and goes narrow at the waist, Ranjeeta suggests focusing more on the arms. She adds, “You can opt for a variety of bangles, bracelets and rings. Instead of a large chain, try going for simple chokers and earrings.”

Light materials are a big no-no for the bustiers. Riya explains, “They will not be able to hold the structure of bustiers. So opt for materials that are thicker with boning and stretch.”
