With a following of 17.9 k on Instagram, this androgynous creative artiste rightfully titled ‘The Generous Queen’ has taken the social media platform by storm. Her elegant and rich style, coupled with bold colours, speak volumes of their artistry. Popularly known by her social media name, ‘Queenandro’; Nirjal Basnet however, formally goes by the name she has chosen for herself.

As an active promoter of gender fluid pride, Nirjal herself identifies as a gender fluid person, saying, “I don’t really identify as or conform to either one (gender)”. This multi-faceted individual not only pursues a successful career as a fashion influencer but also works as a freelancer.

Nirjal takes part in photo shoots and is sometimes even in charge of makeup for events. “A lot of my work is inspired by my own self… I believe in a very unconventional kind of look and beauty standards” says Basnet.

When asked what Nirjal’s childhood was like, she says, “Many people expect me to say I was bullied, but to be honest I have had a considerably smooth childhood. I was always into theatre and because of that I think a lot of positivity projected out of me.”

The Darjeeling originated artiste’s family, reacted to her flamboyance with acceptance. Nirjal shares that growing up they embraced her femininity and recalls being told by her dad ‘not be too extra’ and to ‘tone it done a bit’ whereas Nirjal’s mom went that extra mile to even buy her ‘sexy dress’ for a  play.

Basnet, passionately talks against how society confines an individual to a particular gender, because of which the person is further forced to dress or not dress a certain way, “That’s not fair at all,” Nirjal says. However the industry is fully welcoming of Nirjal’s eccentric style at  fashion events, “In fact, the more ‘Oh My God’ I get, the better,” adds Nirjal.

Speaking about the fashion industry, Nirjal says, “Fashion has no rules. It has inspired and given hope to so many people from the LGBTQ+ community to express themselves and form one of the largest creative platforms for the LGBTQ+ community.

On advising aspiring creative artistes Basnet says “Give yourself time...work for free, don’t show attitude and don’t throw tantrums. One day you will come to a realisation that all your actions and efforts are coming back manifold,” advises Nirjal. An androgynous icon, she continues to break the boundaries of beauty and gender one step at a time.
