Kebabs at Grill O'Phillic

The bylanes of Triplicane are known for their amazing food. However, it’s not the first place you think of when you say barbecue, or western barbecue. But, things might be changing. While Triplicane isn’t really considered upscale, Grill O’Phillic is trying to break that cliché.

I walked in to this newly opened restaurant over the weekend and was pleasantly surprised. A word of warning though — do not drive an SUV into these lanes.
The restaurant itself has a fair amount of appeal, but its true essence lies in its food. After touring the world, learning and cooking myriads of cuisines, Chef Raja of Grill O’Phillic, makes some of the most mind blowing South Asian fare that you could taste in this city.

The Cambodian prawns were so exquisite that, it was for the first time, during a food review that I had asked for a second portion. The seafood sizzler was cooked and spiced to perfection. For those of you who enjoy seafood cooked perfectly, this is the place to go! For others, especially those who like their seafood overcooked, find another place. While it’s important to mention that food, like so many things, is subjective, this restaurant is objectively good. It’s also one of the few places in the city where you can get a version of the poutine. I once referred to poutine as ‘heart attack on a plate’. This version however, is much lighter. Since there is not enough space to explain poutine, I suggest you Google it.

One of the most amazing things about the chef is that with 17 years of experience he can literally make you anything. I watched him as he jumped across the kitchen to the dessert counter to whipup drinks. If that’s not a hallmark for excellence, I don’t know what is.

Interestingly, the history behind the start of this restaurant sounds more like the beginning of a 90s jokes. A doctor, a lawyer and an engineer decided to start a restaurant...

So, there you have it — awesome food, amazing people and prices to die for. You really can’t ask for more in terms of dining experience. This week, simply head to Triplicane. It’s the new high-end eating hub. Oh, and by the way, do tell them Cary sent you!
