Buttering up for the Thalaiva: Kabali inspired cakes
Be it Kabali inspired cakes or Pokemon bites, these city girls are making it trendy when yum.
They’re adding a bit of sunshine to the lives of thousands of Thalaiva fans with their tribute to the God of south Indian cinema, Rajinikanth.
Sarada Sankar and Jayapavithra Ramani (JP) of Butter Side Up in Bellandur who specialise in custom made, theme-based cakes and cupcakes have succumbed to the demands of their fans of baking fantasies and the latest addition to their creations is Kabali themed cakes.
Their Pokemon (following the Pokemon craze) and Minion cakes and cupcakes are also very popular with youngsters. They also create made-to-order, bespoke wedding cakes and desserts. Think crazy, cute, sentimental, whimsical or the just-about-anything-under-the-sun kind of ideas and they will transform it all onto a decadent cake.
The cousin sisters Sarada who worked in the IT industry for seven years before plunging into entrepreneurship and JP who is an engineer and worked as an analyst for two years and joined Sarada to create truly edible masterpieces, states, “Cooking and baking and watching others relish our creations gives us a high. We baked for the joy of it all during our IT days and soon began baking for all our colleagues’ birthdays and that’s when buttersideupcakes.com began. As a food start-up, we took up every thing under the sun; be it catering for food to birthday parties and then fondants cakes. But our forte was in cakes, so we decided to stick to just cakes and desserts. We bake confectioneries and make customisable and bespoke desserts. Our highpoints are our gravity defying cakes, like the Eagle Cake and the Chibi Cake. Of course, the latest on our list are the Kabali cakes as we ourselves huge fans of Rajinikanth.”
Talking of their inspiration behind Kabali cake, Sarada reveals, “One of the fans wanted to gift his friend a Rajinikanth cake and the brief was to pay a tribute to Rajini Sir, so we decided to focus on Superstar’s Kabali avatar as the centrepiece and feature stills from his most epic movies around the cake in a showreel. We have featured stills from his first movie Aboorva Raagangal (that epic gate-opening bit), also from Baasha, Padayappa, Thillu Mullu, 16 Vaydinilae, Ragavendra, Arunachalam and Murattu Kaalai. There was insane levels of excitement in kitchen while we were making this cake!”
Other popular cakes they bake are classic chocolate, banana chocolate, coffee hazelnut, blueberry, fresh mango, peanut butter, red velvet and checkered cakes. “We also offer a variety of cookies like chocolate chip, tutti frutti and nan khatai, besides tea cakes, tarts, macaroons, choux pastries, desserts in jars etc,” adds Jayapavithra.
