Cancer patient denied' treatment at Malabar Cancer Centre

KANNUR: Relatives of a cancer patient from Chokli, Kannur, alleged that the man was denied treatment at Malabar Cancer Centre (MCC), Thalassery. Gangadharan C. had undergone treatment at Regional Cancer Centre (RCC), Thiruvananthap-uram before approaching MCC, the relatives said. However, the hospital authorities said that the complaint was personally targeting the director and was baseless. Mr Gangadharan said that he was diagnosed with cancer six months ago and had been undergoing treatment at RCC. However, a week back, he returned from Thiruvananthapuram after his chemotherapy and wanted to get the remaining procedures done from MCC.

“When we checked with the director, we were informed that the hospital would not let outside patients and the treatment cannot be provided with treatment here,” said Mr Gangadharan. He added that he, along with the relatives, approached Cooperative Hospital, Thalassery, which provided the treatment for free. He sent emails to Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan and P.K. Sreemathy MP on the neglect by the MCC. However, MCC director Dr B. Satheesan told this newspaper that the allegations were baseless and targeting him personally. “This patient was told to undergo a few tests and check-ups which are mandatory for the patients to continue treatment here. He was not ready for that and without protesting, left the hospital. After leaving the hospital, he is raising the complaint, targeting the hospital and me personally. I fear the unions inside the hospital are behind such hate campaigns,” said Dr Satheesan.
