KOZHIKODE: Thalaserry General Hospital is all set to become the first government hospital in Kannur to be equipped with facilities to conduct urosurgeries, thanks to the Rs 1 crore aid from the MP fund of Prof Richard Hay, the Anglo Indian representative in Parliament. The District Collector has given administrative sanction for Rs 82 lakh for the purchase of equipment for Urology operations. This is the first time that the Hospital has received such a huge amount for development from the MLA/MP fund. Though Kannur District Hospital also has experts in the urology department, it lacks facilities.

Speaking to Deccan Chronicle, Hospital Superintendent Dr K.K Rajaram said that the aid would help common people to have expensive surgeries cheaply. "At present we are conducting only open surgeries. Once we purchase the equipment, we can do laparoscopic surgeries. Since we already have expert doctors in Urology here, the new facilities will definitely take the hospital to new heights," he said. The Superintendent added that the present minor urology operation theatre will be modified for better treatment using RSBY fund (electrical) and Asset Maintenance Fund (civil works) of the state government.

"Poor people cannot afford uro-surgery. These facilities would help not just people from Kannur, but also those from Wayanad and Kozhikode who come here regularly for treatment. “I hope that since the funding has already been sanctioned, the authorities will order the equipment,"he added. Prof Hay added that he would also work for the overall development of the Hospital.
