Hyderabad: Too much iron rusts the brain
A normal amount of iron-rich foods is healthy but excess means that the body cannot discard it.
Hyderabad: Iron-rich spinach might not always be the first choice for a healthy brain, if recent research is anything to go by. The study by Florey Institute in Melbourne and the Canberra-based Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation suggests that ‘brain rust’ is formed by oxidative stress, which is said to lead to neurodegenerative diseases. The oxidative process or rust, that takes place in the brain due to iron is similar to what happens to the metal in the open.
Brain rust occurs when there is a build-up of iron content in the brain. The iron content does not allow the formation of antioxidants which can neutralise free radicals.
Overenthusiastic consumption of iron-rich foods like spinach or supplements, unless advised by a doctor, therefore, holds their own dangers. Neurologist Dr Sandeep Nayani said, “Although it is too soon to say that iron-rich foods should be avoided due to brain rust, it could be a factor for the same. The iron build-up in the brain leads to death of cells which causes diseases such as Alzheim-er’s, Parkinson’s and dementia.”
“There is a disorder called haemochromatosis where the body loads up too much iron. Building up of iron content in one’s body is not healthy,” said neurologist Dr Sudhir Kumar.
“It doesn’t allow the body parts to function. Too much of iron content in one’s brain can also have harmful side effects,” he added. Neurologists said that eating too much of iron-rich foods will lead to excess iron content. The recent fad of iron supplements will also prove to be harmful.
“A normal amount of iron-rich foods is healthy but excess means that the body cannot discard it. People with normal haemoglobin levels should not have iron supplements unnecessarily. If the kidney and liver stop processing the iron, it will lead to oxidation and can also harm organs,” Dr Kumar said.
Senior neurologist Dr Mohan Das said, “The oxidative process that takes place with iron and the protein amyloid releases free radicals which cause cells to die. We are trying many methodologies to ensure oxidation and one of them is Vitamin E.”
