New research reveals a high fiber diet and a cereal could help prevent and tackle bowel cancer.

Previous research has shown foods that contain  roughage can help prevent the disease from developing.

Scientists also found fiber can help boost survival rates of people already diagnosed with the disease, the Daily Mail reported.

The study found an additional five grams of roughage in the diet was linked with a 22% reduced risk of being diagnosed with the cancer.

Those already diagnosed had an 18% reduced risk of dying from the disease.

"Eating more fiber after colorectal cancer diagnosis is associated with a lower risk of dying from colorectal cancer," senior study author Dr Andrew Chan from Harvard Medical School and  Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston told the Daily Mail.

"This seems to be independent of the amount of fiber eaten before diagnosis," he added.

However, the type of fiber also matters. "It appears that cereal fiber and foods high in whole grains seem to be associated with the lowest risk of dying from colorectal cancer,' Dr Chan explained.
