KOZHIKODE: Kozhikode Municipal Corporation in association with the Gynaecology Society of India Kozhikode Medical College chapter is launching a year-long health awareness programme for girl students. Expert gynaecologists will take classes and interact with the students in order to help them to better understand the changes in their body and also to provide a platform to discuss their physical and mental issues. The project will be implemented in all government and aided higher secondary schools during the first phase. The students will be given classes at least once a week on various issues related to girl's health as part of the project.

"Many girls have the problem of not knowing the changes happening in the body and have vague ideas about it, probably gleaned from books or newspapers. We have also found that not many girls approach their parents or teachers to discuss their doubts. The project aims at giving them clarity on such issues and also providing them a comfortable atmosphere to discuss with experts," said P.S Jayakumar, Assistant Professor, Health Education, Kozhikode Government Medical College.

Classes will be taken for boys too on smoking and drinking alcohol, wherever similar programme are not conducted by other organisations. "This health awareness programme will help to fill the gap by helping the students clear their doubts and also to help the authorities better address such issues," added M. Radhakrishnan Master, Kozhikode Corporation Education Standing Committee Chairman. The project will be launched this month. Ahead of the implementation, the civic body has also called a meeting of principals.
