Hyderabad: Benefits of early detection of dementia are innumerable, according to medical experts. Neurologists suggest that the earlier detection can slow the progression of the disease.

Dr Deepika Sirineni said, “The memory test, which is given to patients, keeps their brain cells active and helps in preserving the cells. The brain becomes active with these tests and the mind is strengthened. You can slow down the disease.”

The initial test for detection is the Folstein mini mental test. If the patient is found to have any signs of memory loss, neuropsychological tests are done.

There has been an increase in the description of colour coordinated tests as it has been found that colour helps in retention of memory. Dr Alok Ranjan, a neurosurgeon, said, “The more clues you can give to a patient during a memory test, the easier it is for retention. So, adding additional colour to a word will give the mind a hint. The whole process makes the brain stronger.”

The common tests for a stronger memory are crosswords, sudoku and picture puzzles. “Picture puzzles help patients form links,” says Dr Alok.

Consumption of alcohol and smoking are prohibited once the warning signs begin.
