Adequate hydration, rest and cleanliness make all the difference

With Bengaluru receiving the heaviest rainfall it has ever seen over the last few weeks, it is important that people become aware of the water-borne diseases that may arise during this wet season. After all, prevention is always better than cure. 

Besides water-borne diseases like typhoid, cholera and gastroenteritis, vector-borne diseases such as dengue and malaria are also predominant during this season due to the stagnant water and overflowing drains, which are an ideal breeding ground for mosquitoes. People with weaker immune systems are more susceptible to these diseases and should consult a doctor in case of symptoms such as nausea, abdominal pain, dysentery, diarrhoea and fever.

Adequate hydration, intake of medicines in case of high temperature, adequate rest and if needed, antibiotics as prescribed by the doctor are the recommended treatment for water-borne diseases. In such times, it is important that the civic authorities take quick action to bring the situation under control as that can play a major role in protecting the people from preventable diseases.

Prevention

  •  Have fresh fruits and vegetables to boost your body’s immunity.
  •  Do not drink water from taps on public outlets or roads
  •  Always keep an umbrella or a raincoat in your bag; getting drenched in rain is a strict no during this season
  •  Wearing warm clothes, preferably full sleeved clothes will help prevent vector borne diseases during the day
  •  Cleanliness plays a major role in keeping you healthy. Keep your homes clean, and don’t let water stagnate around your house or neighbourhood

Dos and Don’ts when you are affected

  •  Drink clean, safe, filtered or boiled water
  •  Do not drink beverages with ice made from unboiled tap water
  •  Drink only boiled water in this season or drinks made from filtered potable water
