Hyderabad: The release of the growth hormone ‘brain derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF)’ is found to have a positive effect on the brain.
BDNF was discovered in the 1950s and since then there has been a lot of research work carried out on this hormone which gives insight into the feelings of the brain. BDNF shares about 50 per cent of the amino acid identity which is very important for learning and memory in the brain.
Dr Varalakshmi, vice- principal at Apollo Physiotherapy College, explained, “BDNF is activity dependent which means that if the body is active the power of the hormone to grasp in terms of learning and memory is better. It plays a major role in neural development and also cell survival. At the clinical level it is an important factor in treating neurodegenerative disorders.”
