A rare genetic disorder is the reason behind this girl's big beautiful eyes
The hole at the center called the pupil may be misshapen and in some cases there may be two pupils.
Big eyes are generally described as a good think and a facial feature that enhance a person’s appearance. But in some cases these enchanting eyes may not be a genetic advantage.
Two-year-old Mehlani Martinez was born with big pretty eyes, but this feature may just leave her blind in the future. The child suffers from a rare disorder called Axenfeld-Gieger syndrome which causes small or non-existent irises making it look like the eyes don’t have a coloured part.
The hole at the center called the pupil may be misshapen and in some cases there may be two pupils. Children with such a condition are usually sensitive to light which offers the eye through the pupil.
This is why Mehlani has to wear sunglasses every time she steps out of the house. Thanks to a surgery she had months after her birth, Mehlani has maintained her ability to see.
