A new study has found that eliminating monosodium glutamate (MSG) can reduce discomfort drastically, the Daily Mail reported.

MSG is mostly used in stock cubes, crisps and ready-made meals. It has been found to overstimulates receptors in the brain that leads to cell death, which has been linked to chronic pain.

Previous studies claim MSG causes brain damage.

For the study, participant filled out a questionnaire regarding the impact of pain they experiences and kept a one-week food-symptom diary. They were then either given water with  'alternative spices' without MSG and water and alternative spices or 1,000mg doses of acetaminophen every day.

Researchers say cutting it out can ease chronic pain by 30% in two weeks.

"This would be incredible if we could impact chronic pain simply by making slight modifications to diet," study author Dr Daniel Clauw from the University of Michigan, told the Daily Mail.

The study was originally published in the journal Nutrition.
