Constipation may not be considered a serious illness but it may have drastic consequences if taken lightly. While it may cause some trouble for a short time, but can be fatal if it goes on for long.

A 57-year-old Australian man almost died after he was unable to go to the toilet for three days. Constipation for such a long time caused a build up of two litres of faeces in his stomach which was removed to save the man’s life.

It had caused life-threatening abdominal compartment syndrome causing increased pressure in the stomach. It also cut off blood supply leaving him unable to use his right leg and caused kidney damage.

Further examination of the man showed renal impairment and metabolic acidosis which happens when kidneys don’t remove enough acid from the body. Removal of the build up restored blood supply to his leg and doctors located pulse again.

He was discharged from intensive care after four days with constipation medication by doctors.
