Get fit by doing your laundry

Let’s face it, we’re all busy, and we don’t always have time to head to the gym or laundromat. To save yourself a trip, wouldn’t it be easier to combine the two?

Students of Dalian Nationalities University in China have created a way to cut down on time and energy use with their new invention, the Bike Washing Machine (or BiWa).

The desire for clean clothes is a great motivator for exercising: When your favourite shirt is stained and your washing machine is powered by your pedaling, you know you’re going to be pedaling like mad. The BiWa clothing drum is tucked inside the wheel and begins to rotate as the rider pedals. Excess energy is used to power a display screen that gives updates on the status of the clothes’ cleanliness. So far, this invention is just in the concept phase, but there’s definitely a demand for it amongst students, apartment dwellers, and time-pressed parents.
