Bengaluru: 25-year-old, Tufail Arif Basha, an engineering student from Srinagar can now walk on his feet, thanks to the treatment he underwent at the city hospital.

He was suffering from Ehlers-Danlos syndrome and Tufail gave Delhi a miss and came to HOSMAT Hospital in city on January 21. Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome is a group of disorders that affect the connective (collagen) tissues that support the skin, bones, blood vessels, and many other organs and tissues.

"Defects in connective tissues cause the signs and symptoms of Ehlers-Danlos syndrome, which vary from mildly loose joints to life-threatening complications," said Dr Thomas Chandy, Chief of Orthopaedics, HOSMAT Hospital.

Tufail was not able to walk normally because the toe of his right foot was severely bent inwards and gone under the foot. This was causing him severe pain. “I used to limp and couldn't wear normal footwear because of this condition," Tufail said.

On January 24, Dr Chandy and Dr Ravi Shankar operated on him. "We did a corrective and reconstructive surgery, where the deformity of great toe was corrected and made straight using K wire (pin). This pin will be removed after 6 weeks. Tufail will walk normally and lead an active life after the surgery," Dr Thomas said.

“It is comforting to know that I can now walk and no longer have to limp. My confidence will definitely go up,” said a relieved Tufail, who will be leaving for his hometown in a few days.
