3 more cases of diphtheria in Malappuram

A total of 1,323 children were given vaccine at 30 centres in the district on Tuesday as part of a campaign.

The health authorities have ordered more medicine for diphtheria treatment at the MCH.

Malappuram: Three more suspected cases of diphtheria were reported from various parts of the district on Tuesday. Two boys aged 12  and a third one aged eight  from Irimbliyam, Cherukavu and Pulikkal panchayats have been admitted to Kozhikode Medical College Hospital.  Two of them are partially immunised and the other has not been vaccinated, said Dr. V. Ummer Farook, district medical officer.

The latest  cases were traced by the health officials during the immunisation drive in  the district following  two diphtheria deaths last week. Eight cases, including two deaths, were reported from the district this year so far. A total of 1,323 children were given vaccine at  30 centres in the district on Tuesday as part of the campaign.

Meanwhile,  the health authorities have ordered more medicine for  diphtheria treatment at the MCH.   Some  50 vials of serum will reach the MCH on Wednesday. An order has been placed for 500 vials of more serum which will be brought from Delhi soon in the wake of more diphtheria cases in Malappuram.
