Cheemeni open jail gets VIP cattle guests
Kasargod dwarf is much sought after, and even Punjab CM had procured one.
Kasargod: Now, Cheemeni Open Jail will have the blissful presence of the acclaimed cow breed, Kasaragod dwarf. Kasargod rotary club has come up to supply five indigenous cattle to the cow shed of the jail. “We have 18 different breeds of cow here in our cattle shed. The presence of Kasargod dwarf is something we all sought for long. We are planning to sell its milk which has high nutritional and medicinal value,” said joint jail superintendent Jagadeesan K.V.
The decision followed the visit of Rotary International director C. Bhaskar there on Sunday. Kasargod dwarf bulls are on an average 107.3 cms tall while the cows have a height of 95.83 cms. The male calves gain about 7.8 times the birth weight at one year of age, and this kind of growth rate is observed to be the highest ever reported for any Indian cattle at this stage.
They are well adapted to the hot climate and possess high heat tolerance and
disease resistance. After Vechur cow, the breed is much sought after, and even Punjab chief minister had procured one. Rotary Club official Dr Jayaprakash Upadhyaya said they would also do organic cultivation in an acre of land on the jail premises. “We would supply organic manure, saplings and agriculture utensils besides providing classes on scientific methods,” he said. He said 500 grow bags were also ready to dot both sides of the pathways of the jail entrance. On the 303 acres of land in Cheemeni jail, poultry and goat farms are also functioning.
