Hyderabad: Summers not so hot anymore
The summer, instead, was marked by moderate rise in temperatures' and more of increased thunderstorm activity.
Hyderabad: The summer this year has turned out to be unusual with no severe heat wave events. A severe heat wave is when the mercury goes 5ºC above the normal between March and May.
The highest temperature recorded in Hyderabad so far this year in Hyderabad was 42.5ºC, and Adilabad topped the state with 44.8°.
The summer, instead, was marked by ‘moderate rise in temperatures’ and more of increased thunderstorm activity.
With the Indian Meteorological department announcing the onset of the monsoon in Telangana state between June 5 and 10, the state has 15-18 days of summer left.
In addition, the IMD has predicted more thunderstorms. Summer can be said to be as good as over.
Speaking to this newspaper, IMD-Hyderabad director Y.K. Reddy said, “No severe heat wave was recorded so far this summer. The temperatures for May are expected to be normal for this time of the year.”
He said temperatures had dropped due to frequent thunderstorms. Meteorology expert Bhannu Murthy said the summer has two phenomena, heatwave and thunderstorms.
“This year, thunderstorms proved dominant and there is a dip in temperatures. There is no more chance of a heat wave. Moisture content coming from the Bay of Bengal is more than sufficient to bring rain,” he said.
Another expert, Mr Jeevanand Reddy, said, “The weather in summer depends on parameters like local circular patterns, cyclonic activity and moisture among others. The pattern is that there should be a minimum of five claps of thunder in April, six in May and five in June. Andhra Pradesh is different because it has two monsoons — southwest and northeast.”
An expert attributed it to La Nina, the reverse of El Nino. Weather expert C.V.V. Bhadram said, “El Nino summers are hot because of intensified heat waves and the annual rainfall will be low. The La Nina effect causes moderate summers, leading to normal rainfall. These two types occur in a periodical manner like 3 year El Nino and 2 years La Nina, this year must be a La Nina affected summer.”
