THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: As has been predicted, the frequency of summer showers have increased during April calming maximum temperatures that threatened to touch an all time high. The maximum temperature in Palakkad, which had just two weeks ago touched 41 degree Celsius, has dropped below 40 degree Celsius. In Punalur, the other hot zone of the state, the heat was markedly lower at 36 degree Celsius.

However, the minimum temperatures have shown a distinct increase across the state. For instance, Thiruvananthapuram has recorded a minimum temperature of 28 degree Celsius, the highest since 1987. In 30 decades, it has never touched 27 degree Celsius. In other words, the difference between maximum and minimum temperatures is narrowing.

“Such a phenomenon can be attributed to cloudy nights. This traps heat in the atmosphere causing intense humidity during nights,” said Dr Janardhanan Nair, former weatherman.

However, summer showers have shown a perceptible increase. While the deficiency was nearly 100 percent in March, the deficiency has dropped dramatically to less than 50 percent. The Meteorological Department has made it clear that summer showers will increase during April and May. Kasargod, Kannur, Malappuram and Palakkad are the worst affected.
