Mexican women 'marry' trees to save them

The wedding was held to draw attention to tree logging which is illegal.

Photos of women in Mexico marrying trees to pledge their devotion has gone viral, the Metro reported.

The wedding was not legally binding, but it was meant to draw attention to tree logging, a big problem in San Jacinto Amilpas, Oaxaca state.  The state has been hit by deforestation.

Forests reportedly cover A third of Mexico’s land and criminal groups mostly operate illegal logging.

Organisation 'Bedani' had initially started the 'marry a tree' ritual as a way of giving thanks to Mother Nature.

However, it later gave way to a symbolic wedding based on the customs of Inca people where men and women wed trees. The rite is led by environmentalist Richard Torres.
