The continuous ambient air quality monitoring system', notified under the national ambient air quality standards, will be the third such system in the state after Kochi and Thiruvananthapuram.

Kozhikode: Kozhikode will soon have the state-of-the-art air pollution checking system in the city. The installation of the equipment on the clock-tower building at Palayam is going on and is expected to get functional in November.

The ‘continuous ambient air quality monitoring system’, notified under the national ambient air quality standards, will be the third such system in the state after Kochi (Eloor) and Thiruvananthapuram.

“The Kerala Pollution Control Board (KPCB) officials are supervising the installation of the imported equipment,” said KPCB Kozhikode regional office senior environmental engineer C.V. Jayasree.

The Rs 1 crore system will work on nine parameters including checking the quantity of oxides of nitrogen and sulphur dioxide, etc.

“The system will track the real-time value of the air pollution and will display it on a wide screen for public as to create awareness on air pollution,” KPCB chairman K. Sajeevan said.

The system aims at effective management for ambient air quality and reducing the damaging effects of air pollution. The system can be monitored from the KPCB Regional office here.

It was scheduled to be installed in last financial year. Authorities blame the inordinate delay on the impediment in importing equipment from Germany.

The KPCB is contemplating to give its maintenance work to contract agencies. Also, a full-time supervisor will be required.
