Period sex? Doctors say, ‘yes’
Here are some reasons why you should embrace the idea of having sex during periods.
Mumbai: So many times you might have had to control your itch down south solely because – lady love is chumming. The torturous teasing can get worse when you know it’s “that time of the month” where you both cannot engage in a steaming lovemaking session.
Yes, we are talking about the most common and hushed topic – sex during periods. The concept of having period sex has come a long way and to prove it right, we highlight some of the benefits to outnumber the disadvantages associated with it.
Natural lubrication:
For some men, vaginal lubrication can act as the perfect aphrodisiac. During periods women release a lot of other fluids along with blood. It is this fluid that does the entire trick and can get the man closer to the woman.
During periods when the vagina is stimulated, the glands secrete fluids. These fluids combine with the menstrual blood and make it more lubricated as compared to the non-period days.
Relief from menstrual cramps:
It is a well-known fact that periods can be quite painful and dreadful at times. Prostaglandins are chemicals compounds which are released during periods that can make women experience cramps. This is also the chemical which causes the uterine to contract during periods.
Oxytocin and endorphins released during sex act as a natural painkiller. “Orgasm helps in bringing out the leftover blood from the uterus and magically reduces the pain of menstrual cramps,” shares Dr Aruna Kalra, Director Obstetrics and Gynecology of CK Birla Hospital for Women.
However, there could be another possible angle to pain reduction. Some experts are of the opinion that the pleasure experienced during sex overrides the period cramps.
Heightened sex drive:
There are those moments you feel like pouncing on your partner and your wild animal instinct comes forth. Well, don’t be surprised because it’s your hormone that is to be blamed. During this time, your hormones are at its peak and are fluctuating. So to enjoy an adventurous lovemaking session, this is the right time to indulge.
What are the chances of getting pregnant?
A lot of people think that it is absolutely safe to have sex when the woman is chumming. Dr Sushma Tomar, Consultant Obstetrician & Gynaecologist, Fortis Hospital opines, “It is sometimes possible for the girl to conceive. The irregular, delayed or short period cycle can cause pregnancy. It is, therefore, advisable that if you are not planning to have a baby, use protection. “
She further elaborates on the do’s and don’ts to be kept in mind while having period sex:
- Hygiene should be of paramount importance. Blood acts as a powerful medium for transfer of infection. Therefore, give yourself a proper wash after you are done with the act.
- Couples who do not intend to have a baby, use condoms. Blood is a good medium for sperm to survive. Use of condoms can lower the risk of getting infected by Sexually Transmitted Disease (STD). Alternatively, the lady can use contraceptive pills.
- Ensure to remove tampons as this can penetrate deeper into the vagina causing unease.
