‘Bunk’ it in luxury on your next vacay
Bunk beds seem to the latest trend across chic hotels all over the globe.
Mumbai: Bunk beds remind us of childhood, of fun and adventure and of student life, where dorms often make use of bunk beds to maximise space usage. One can easily associate the idea of using bunk beds with discomfort, obstructed physical intimacy and impracticality in adulthood but bunk beds seem to be popular trend in hotels across the world.
Vogue recently identified the inclination of certain chic hotels offering private bunk rooms. Not the typical overcrowded, stuffy dorm rooms for backpackers but high-end, luxe rooms with bunk beds, which are ideal for people travelling in a group. These luxurious bunk bed options are ideal for bachelorette parties and family reunions.
“Even larger hotels are joining in on the childlike fun. First introduced at Lightstone’s Times Square hotel, the decision to include bunk beds at four other Moxy Hotel locations was partly about maximizing the space of the room. “Filling a room with traditional beds being side by side would have been the easy answer, but capitalizing on the vertical space was a better opportunity, especially given our target audience,” Aliya Khan, vice president of Global Design Strategies for Marriott International (which owns Moxy), told Vogue.
From The Asbury hotel in New Jersey to Shibuya’s Trunk (Hotel) in Tokyo, bunk bed-style comfort is being offered without compromising on the affluence quotient. Detroit’s The Siren features a twin bunk-bed room, ‘The Hideout’, which it says is ideal “for friends on an adventure, tycoons in training or children with parents across the hall”, with a price range that starts from USD 159 per night.
Volkshotel in Amsterdam charges up to 558 euros for its standard ‘L’ room that is meant for a group of four, including two in a double bed suspended from the ceiling “for those who like to be on top of things”. If you are heading to the Miami area with your gang, then try out the Family Miracle Mile Lofts at Hotel Colonnade. Located on the top floor, the lofts have killer views of the resort's pool deck and most importantly, they have bunk beds plus a sleeper sofa in the living room.
The LetsBunk Poshtel in the sprawling Hauz Khas area of New Delhi also offers the bunk bed-experience with their 'Superior Quadruple' and 'King Room with Rooftop Patio' options. According to The Guardian, the appeal of bunk beds is endless. The article explains, “Bunk beds are the essence of fun, rendered in steel or wood like some kind of totem to novelty. Maybe it’s the combination of physical proximity without any potential for eye contact, fostering late-night confidences.”
Even one of the world's largest furniture retailer, the Swedish giant Ikea describes them as “much more fun than an ordinary bed.” So next time when you holiday with friends or family, do not hesitate from adding a bit of fun and opting for a bunk bed room instead of a regular, run-of-the-mill, mundane hotel room.
