Kannur: Bring tiffinbox to get 10 per cent off on food
The project is part of the district administration's campaign to reduce the use of plastic in daily life.
Kannur: Now, one can get 10 percent off on parcels from hotels in Kannur provided one carries a tiffin box instead of depending on plastic carry bags and disposable plastic boxes provided by hotels. The unique project is being implemented by the Kannur District administration in association with the Kerala Hotel and Restaurants Association (KHRA) Kannur taluk unit in order to promote environmental conservation by reducing the use of plastic. The project is part of the district administration’s campaign to reduce the use of plastic in daily life.
Speaking to DC, district collector Mir Muhammed Ali said that the response from hotel owners was very positive when he presented the idea before them. “It is a voluntary effort and they are very happy to be part of this campaign. At present, 53 hotels in the City are co-operating with the campaign,” he said. “The basic idea is to make people understand that they can live without depending on most of the plastic items. When that habit of carrying a tiffin box becomes a routine, obviously the use of plastic will be reduced,” he added. As an experiment, the administration is offering this discount till November 30.
To promote the use of cloth carry bags, a green channel has been introduced in City super markets and hyper markets exclusively for those who are carrying cloth bags. As part of the District Administration’s ‘We Are Kannur’ campaign, the administration , civic bodies and various organisations are taking part in awareness programmes on the use of plastic till April first week. A meeting of all officials concerned was held on October 31 to chalk out plans. The administration is also running a plastic waste collection campaign.
