Millennial woes at the workplace
A recent survey indicates that young working professionals are constantly looking at changing jobs as they get dissatisfied easily!
Have you grown up admiring how your parents woke up, got dressed and left to work with a smile on their face and wondered when will you be that old? Well, the scenario isn’t really that easy in today’s fast paced lifestyle. According to a recent survey by the Gallup poll, Millennials are the least engaged generation in the workplace. We delve deeper to understand the psyche.
Vinay Raj a consultant at a travel firm believes this detachment is because the prime focus for millennial individuals currently is a financial growth. He says, “Most of us millennials have unconventional hobbies which are irrational to turn into careers. So we get a job only to provide for our families and contribute to the financial growth of the family. In the bargain we tend to eye on a luxurious lifestyle and our ultimate aim becomes to achieve these high targets we set for ourselves. Bound by company’s norm and the society’s pressure to constantly keep up and live with a certain status that labels us, the sad truth is that we are forced to work for money. Hence the study seems true as we only focus on getting ahead in this race.”
The study has also analysed that most Millennial individuals are unhappy with their work and are seen quitting within the period of one year. Speaking about what could be the prime reason for youngsters to quit from jobs with a short period of time Alia Fathima a business development manager says, “We mostly show up at work just to clock in our hours. We are not emotionally connected to our job and in my opinion you need passion to engage better at workplaces. The other reason is the fact that there is a sea of opportunities out there and all we need is to feel that the job we’re in is worthwhile.”
Shilpa Mohan Lal a business manager says millennals are not willing to compromise. She says, “We get a job to experience a secured life with a fixed income that will be credited into our accounts irrespective of the kind of performance churned out. At times when the job role might not fit into our lifestyle we tend to hop jobs. I certainly will not compromise my comfort at workplace. Though this issue can be easily diverted towards money and a fast lane to climbing the ladder as the culprit, the fact is that most of us are on the constant look out for an opportunity that will embrace both our passion and skills.”
Explaining the factors that influence this detachment towards work Vinod Arora a senior HR manager at a leading online shopping portal says, “Engagement is an important aspect when it comes to work place harmony. Generally organisations tend to do some fun activity in name sake of engagement. However, they forget that engagement isn’t just fun activity but beyond that. The focus should be in keeping employees at work in the best possible ways. Once you wake up —you should feel positive to go to work — that’s engagement. Other factors like low salary, work culture, employee-supervisor harmony, etc tends to add to an inquisitive mind for job hoping. This eventually leads to a non productive employee which ultimately becomes a liability to an organisation instead of an asset. To overcome this situation it is an equal responsibility of an employee and employer to make their work place a better place so that you get mental peace and become more productive”
