Up hip hop Creek
It's your chance to go crazy with all kinds of routines dance, music and workshops, with this special event dedicated to the genre.
It’s the season of hip hop in the city! Everything hip hop — from dance battles, beat boxing and even workshops for an enriching learning experience, are all set to be held at UB City.
The genre has become a huge rage in the city with beat boxing and dance-offs held not only at college campuses but also at underground festivals all over India! And now, all this overflowing talent finally has a space to showcase itself, at the Spunk Your Creek Live event.
The reason for initiating such an event, was to make sure the genre had it’s own space in the country, according to Wiaana Mahajan, the CEO. “Spunk Your Creek is a term for Representing your tribe.
Reality TV has eaten up what hip hop is about. There are so many new fusion dances like Bolly-hop which is a mix of Bollywood and hip hop that there is no respect for the genre anymore, especially in India. I started Spunk Your Creek Live with the intention of giving hip hop the respect it deserves and to educate people about authentic forms of the genre,” she says enthusiastically.
Hip hop has a number of preconceived notions about the style, due to various portrayals of the genre in a number of Hollywood as well as Bollywood films.
“The best part about this event is that people from all over the country come to participate in it and you get to know so much about not just the genre but also how hip hop influenced their lives. And films like Step Up have set some pretty high expectations for me. But it’s brilliant to see the energy of these participants because when they show off their moves, it looks like they stepped out from a scene from the movie!,” says Tanya Sagayanaphan who is looking forward to the beat boxing competition.
The event which is happening for the third consecutive year is already causing quite a stir among hip hop lovers not only in the city, but all over the country too!
“The environment is a very positive and enriching one for people who are interested in the genre. It is also a super fun, and lively event with a feel good atmosphere for people who are even remotely interested in hip hop culture,” says Peter Pious, a break dancer who is judging this year’s event.
So namma ooru, get set to show off your hip hop skills for three continuous days of insane dance and beat box battles!
The event will be held on August 13, 14 and 15 at 1 pm at the UB City Amphitheatre.
