Parmeshwar Godrej, philanthropist and Adi Godrej's wife, passes away

The 70-year-old was suffering from chronic lung diseases for years and passed away at Mumbai's Breach Candy Hospital.

Mumbai: Philanthropist and socialite Parmeswar Godrej, wife of Godrej Group chairman Adi Godrej, breathed her last in Mumbai’s Breach Candy Hospital on Monday night.

She was 70.

Parmeswhar Godrej was undergoing treatment for a degenerative lung disease, according to reports. Doctors also suspected pneumonia.

A formidable presence in the country’s Page 3 circuit, more so for her impeccable style and glamour, Parmeshwar was one of India’s first air hostesses.

She was also the face of several philanthropic initiatives, including promoting awareness for AIDS. She had also launched the Heroes project, along with Hollywood actor Richard Gere and with support from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. The project aimed to mobilise eminent people and the media to fight HIV and AIDS in India.

She was also known for her association with the likes of Pakistani cricketer-turned-politician cricketer Imran Khan and American talk show host Oprah Winfrey.

She will also be remembered for her contribution towards the improvement of women’s and children’s health in India.

Celebrities and politicians, including Khan and Milind Deora, took to Twitter to offer their condolence on her death.
