To understand and perceive good architecture, there should be considerable analytic thought involving the basic principles and elements of design. The syllabus of the first year aims to introduce a creative stimulus and provide a starting point towards Visual Design and basic elements and principles in design.

It’s a comprehensive approach through observation, expression of thoughts and memories in visual forms and multiple attempts of capturing the end product in its full attire.

‘Veiling Lumos’ was given as the culminating assignment for the first year students of SCMS School of Architecture (Batch B), to execute one’s understanding of the past semester’s lessons into a three dimensional form.

The objectives of the assignment included integrating an element and two principles of design of one’s choice, covering partially or completely a light source, considering the need and ambience of the room in which the lampshade/table lamp was being designed for. Creative freedom was completely left to the student from choosing the type of material to choose from to positioning the light source.

The result came out remarkably well as the students put up an honest effort to achieve something different on their own. Products out of curled paper, ice cream sticks, feathers, jute cover, cardboard box, straw etc. were produced in varied permutations. Composing a source of light and the multiple patterns thus created was also a learning outcome.

Each product being unique on its own also helped the student to identify with the various options and possibilities of an ideology. The studio was guided by Ar. Ajay Abey, Ar. Meera Jeeson, Ar. Anjali Sujat and Ar. Varsha Vivek.
