Facts and fake news cuddle up

The running battle between the liberals and the bhakts is the spice of twitter space. We seem so sharply divided along political lines now that the opposing groups are just waiting to troll each other the moment they smell an opening. And Mohandas Pai, an IT veteran who is now an academician, left himself open to ridicule by quoting an obvious fake site with regard to an Indian political party being among the most corrupt in the world.

No tweet testimonial may be needed for a party to be thought corrupt and Indians ones probably as much as the ‘best’ in the world in this matter. The story on the fake site titled, “Top 10 List of Most Corrupt Political Party in the World 2018” listed Indian National Congress in second place, sharing honours with the Nazi Party, Pakistan Muslim League (Nawaz) and National Fascist Party.

How someone with Pai’s IT experience could pick a notorious fake site, which once said Narendra Modi ranked among the most corrupt world leaders, is beyond comprehension. And it took him more than a while to acknowledge that the ‘bbcnewshub’ was a fake, having earlier said that it did not matter to him whether a site was fake or genuine and it is the information on the site is what matters. Twitter space was extremely busy for a while, even if the exchanges were more of hate than humour.

Dear Mr Pai, whether they are corrupt or not, to quote from a fake site, attribute it then to the venerable BBC, is very bad form. Isn't it better to delete your original tweet rather than seeking to confuse people?
