The latest popular tattoo style right now is not some fancy design or symbol. Blackout tattoos – in which large areas of skin are covered in black ink for a period of five years – are winning the hearts of millennials at least online.

It all started when artist Chester Lee from the Oracle Tattoo shop posted a photo of a woman he tattooed with a large blackout design partially covering her chest and arms on Instagram. The viral image managed to win more than 6,400 likes and has set the hashtag #BlackoutTattoo trending.

This bold and admittedly intense form of body art is not only painful but even requires several hours to be completed, says Lee, according to Mic. For those who don’t know, blocks of solid black ink have also been traditionally used for years as a tribal tattoo motif.
