Hyderabad: A food delivery platform user from Hyderabad spent Rs 6 lakh on idlis over the past year, ordering 8,428 plates of the popular breakfast item across South India, including in Bengaluru and Chennai.

On the occasion of World Idli Day on Thursday, food delivery platform Swiggy revealed that the user’s orders were analysed from March 30, 2022, to March 25, 2023, including multiple orders for his friends and family.

The platform said it delivered 33 million plates of idlis in all over the same period, with Bengaluru, Hyderabad and Chennai topping the charts for the number of orders, followed by Mumbai, Coimbatore, Pune, Vizag, Delhi, Kolkata, and Kochi.

Further, the report revealed that 8 am to 10 am was the most popular window for idli orders, but consumers in Chennai, Hyderabad, Bengaluru, Coimbatore and Mumbai also ordered the dish for dinner. Plain idli, with two pieces on a plate, was the most common order.

Analysing trends across cities, it said that rava idli was most popular in Bengaluru, while ‘ghee karam podi’ idli was equally popular among Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh and Telangana. Thatte idli and mini idli, local variations, also featured prominently among the orders.

Swiggy said that idli was the second most popular breakfast item on its platform, beaten only by masala dosa.

The top five restaurants popular for their idlis are A2B – Adyar Ananda Bhavan in Bengaluru and Chennai, Varalakshmi Tiffins in Hyderabad, Sangeetha Veg Restaurant in Chennai and Udipi's Upahar in Hyderabad.
