Fruit sculptures, carvings, enhance Coonoor show
Horticulture departments of 8 districts showcase talent.
COONOOR: The two-day annual fruit show, 58th edition this summer, which got underway at the charming Sim’s Park here at Coonoor hills on Saturday has once again showcased the pomological wealth of the state, as fruit sculptures such as light house and ship made out of various fruits provide extra sheen to the show and has also brought fruity flavor to this elegant park.
Coonoor and fruit show are integral part of the summer in the hills as
the exhibition of fruits drawn from across the state, including the hybrids, during the show had over the years proved to be a crowd puller for summer tourism in the hills.
The horticulture department, which is organising this annual show in
Sim’s Park has not failed to provide the visual treat through the array of fruits as the 30-ft high and 10-ft long Light House sculptured out of 3,000 kg of pineapples and oranges and the 15-ft long and 10-ft high fruity-ship made out of 1000 kg of fruits that includes oranges, grapes, pomegranates and apples, in fact, stand out as catchy magnificent fruit sculptures.
This apart, fruity-sculptures such as peacock, dragon, Kannagi statue, and a horse that have been erected in the park for the show and exhibition of various fruits in the exhibition galley are providing the additional glamour to the show, showcasing a variety of talents.
Dr P.Sankar, Nilgiris district collector inaugurated the show on Saturday morning. For this year’s show, Horticulture departments from 8 districts, including Coimbatore, Salem, Dharmapuri and Theni, are exhibiting the pomological wealth of their respective district to enable the visitors to take a look at those fruits and to enrich their knowledge on fruits through this show.
Display of hill grown fruits such as peach, plum, pears, passion fruit and display of some of the hill grown wild fruits such as hill fig, elaeocarpus (vikky pazham) showcase the fruit wealth of the hills. S.Nipanchy, a tourist from Hosur said that for the first time she was witnessing an array of fruits at a single place and “it is reallyamazing to see the sculptures and carvings made out of fruits”.
