Andhra Pradesh Govt to Revive Handloom Sector Glory: Minister Savita
Minister Savita highlights efforts to revitalise Andhra Pradesh's handloom sector, urging public support to uplift weavers' livelihoods
Vijayawada: Minister for handlooms and textiles and BC welfare S. Savita said the TD-led NDA state government under the leadership of Chief Minister N. Chandrababu is working to restore the glory of weavers and the handloom sector in AP. She said the coalition government will usher in a golden era for weavers and the handloom sector in the state.
Savita, along with Vijayawada East MLA Gadde Ram Mohan Rao, handlooms and textiles principal secretary K Sunitha, commissioner G Rekha Rani, and archaeology and museums commissioner G Vani Mohan, participated in the ‘National Handloom Day 2024’ walkathon between Meris Stella College and Stella Auditorium in Vijayawada on Wednesday.
The minister and citizens actively took part in the walkathon, raising slogans to wear handloom clothes and promote the handloom sector.
Speaking on the occasion, Savita appreciated handloom weavers for protecting the dignity of people by weaving clothes out of silk yarn which are used by humans to cover their bodies.
The state government will strive to empower the weavers' community, she said, adding post bifurcation, the TD government has implemented various welfare schemes and programs to provide sustainable livelihood opportunities for weavers.
However, over the last few years, with little income and a dwindling market for handloom products, many weavers are leaving weaving work, migrating to other places, and being forced to commit suicide, Savita added.
In this regard, the minister appealed to everyone to wear handloom clothes to encourage weavers and bring back the past glory to the handloom sector in the state.
