Odisha: War of Words Over Patnaik Security Downgrade
BJD criticises the downgrading of Naveen Patnaik’s security, while BJP defends the decision as routine protocol
Bhubaneswar: The recent downgrading of security for former Chief Minister and Leader of Opposition Naveen Patnaik—from Z to Y category—has sparked a heated exchange between the Opposition Biju Janata Dal (BJD) and the ruling BJP.
On Saturday, BJD leader Sanjay Das Burma voiced strong objections to the decision on Saturday, urging the state government to ensure there are no lapses in Patnaik’s protection.
“I am shocked by the government’s attitude. It is the government’s responsibility to ensure there is no compromise on the security of Naveen Patnaik, a five-time Chief Minister and Leader of Opposition. The decision to downgrade his security is regrettable, and I hope the government will rectify its mistake,” said Das Burma. “
In response, BJP leader Jaynarayan Mishra argued that the government had acted within the applicable rules for an Opposition leader.
“When I served as Leader of Opposition, I was not provided any security. Why should they expect special treatment now?” said Mishra. “There are established criteria determining who receives Z or Y category security, and the government has simply followed those rules.”
State Director General of Police (DGP) Yogesh Bahadur Khurania described the downgrading as part of a routine review process.
“This is a regular procedure. The state-level committee periodically assesses security requirements and makes adjustments based on field evaluations,” explained the DGP.
