S.M. Krishna Cremated with State Honours

Former CM S.M. Krishna cremated with state honours in Somanahalli. Karnataka declared a holiday to mourn the leader's passing

Bengaluru: Former Chief Minister S.M. Krishna (93) was cremated with full state honours on Wednesday at his native village Somanahalli in Maddur taluk of Mandya. Krishna, a former Union External Affairs Minister, died owing to prolonged illness at his residence in Sadashivanagar of Bengaluru city on Tuesday at around 2.30 am.

On Wednesday, his mortal remains were flown from Bengaluru city to Somanahalli via road. People and his supporters offered their last respects to the departed leader on the way to Somanahalli.

Arrangements were made at Somanahalli for the final rites of Krishna. Chief Minister Siddaramaiah placed a wreath to offer his last respects to the former Chief Minister who served from 1999-2004. Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar, Mandya District incharge minister N. Chaluvarayaswamy, Union Ministers-H.D. Kumaraswamy and Prahlad Joshi among others offered their last respects to Krishna.

The final rites of Krishna were conducted by Krishna’s grandson Amartya under the guidance of head priest Bhanuprakash Sharma. As a mark of respect to the departed leader, the State Government declared a holiday on Wednesday for State Government employees, government/ aided schools and colleges in the State. Police had tightened the security.
