72 Girl Students Fall Ill at Social Welfare Hostel in Yeleswaram

Kakinada:Over 70 girls hostel students at the social welfare girls high school cum junior college in Yeleswaram in Kakinada district fell ill after consuming food on Monday night.

By Tuesday morning, students complaining about stomach ache and vomiting were rushed to the Community Health Centre in Yeleswaram.

Food safety controller B Srinivas told Deccan Chronicle that the students took cabbage curry mixed with yellow-gram. “Samples of ground water, RO water and food materials were sent to the laboratory at Visakhapatnam for chemical analysis. The report is expected after 60 hours.”

As per sources, 625 students were staying in the hostel. Chief minister Chandrababu Naidu, deputy CM Pawan Kalyan and social welfare minister Veeranjaneya Swamy enquired about the incident and asked officials to help the affected students. Swamy said, “All the students are stable and safe parents need not worry.”

District health officer Dr Narasimha Nayak said the students were being given treatment in Yeleswaram and a medical camp was set up at the hostel. He asked the hostel authorities to supply boiled and clean drinking water to the students.

District collector Shanmohan and Prathipadu MLA Satya Prabha along with revenue, FSSAI, RWS, social welfare and health officials visited the hostel and inspected the hostel rooms, kitchen and surrounding areas.

District hospitals coordinator Dr Swapna, Yeswaram municipal commissioner K Siva Prasad, tehsidlar Venkateswara Rao and others were present.
