Visakhapatnam: The sleuths of the CBI caught Chaitanya Kumar, a flight lieutenant and station logistic officer at the Air Force Station in Suryalanka, red-handed while accepting a bribe of `50,000 from a complainant for settling bills related to materials supplied by him.
According to CBI officials, the complainant had received an order for 200 mattresses for the Air Force Station in Suryalanka through a GEM contract dated November 19 last year. The complainant quoted a rate of Rs 2,499 per mattress, totaling Rs 4,99,800, and supplied the mattresses accordingly. The payment of 4,99,800 was credited to his firm’s bank account on November 30. However, after the payment, Chaitanya Kumar demanded a bribe of Rs40,000, which the complainant refused to pay.
Additionally, the complainant supplied two amplifiers worth Rs 42,000 and hired a crane and trailer for Rs 23,364 for the same station. However, the bills for Rs 42,000 and Rs 23,364 were not cleared by Chaitanya Kumar. He further demanded that the complainant pay the earlier amount of ₹40,000 along with an additional Rs 10,000, totaling Rs 50,000, to clear the pending bills. Chaitanya Kumar also threatened that failure to pay would result in no future contracts being offered to the complainant’s firm.
Distressed by the situation, the complainant approached the CBI officials in Visakhapatnam. Following the complaint, a trap was laid, and Chaitanya Kumar was caught red-handed while accepting a bribe of Rs 50,000.
