Andhra Pradesh government to create sports corpus fund

Vijayawada: Minister for transport, youth services, and sports Mandipalli Ram Prasad Reddy, announced that the Andhra Pradesh government, led by Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu is considering establishing a Corpus Fund ranging from Rs 2 crore to Rs 5 crore. This fund aims to provide financial support to deserving athletes facing financial challenges. The proposal will be reviewed by the Chief Minister in an upcoming meeting on sports.

The announcement was made on National Sports Day, which commemorates the birth anniversary of hockey legend Major Dhyan Chand. The minister , along with international badminton player P.V. Sindhu, launched a sports rally at the Indira Gandhi Municipal Corporation (IGMC) Stadium. The event, organised by the Sports Authority of Andhra Pradesh (SAAP), also featured the felicitation of outstanding players and an oath-taking ceremony administered by Reddy.

The Minister highlighted the state's potential in sports, noting that with proper coaching, youth could excel internationally. He praised the previous Telugu Desam regime for its sports promotion efforts and expressed optimism for the future of sports in the state. Reddy announced that SAAP would support sports development and provide advanced equipment and coaching. He also pledged his monthly salary of Rs 3,16,000 to support coaching and sports kits for outstanding, underprivileged players. Participants from the Paris Olympics, including Bommadevara Dhiraj (archery), Yarraji Jyothi, and Jyothika Sri (athletics), along with SAAP officials, were present at the event.
