Vizag CBI Court Sentences Three Postal Dept, Employees to Five Years Imprisonment in Fraud Case

Hyderabad: The Additional Special Judge Court for CBI cases in Visakhapatnam on Thursday sentenced Kodamachili Rajendra Prasad, a sub-post master, and I. Satyanarayana and P. Appalaswamy, then postal assistants at the sub-post office in Yeleswaram in East Godavari district to five years imprisonment in connection with a fraud case.

It also imposed a fine of Rs 7,000, Rs 8.29 lakh and Rs 8.59 lakh on the three accused respectively, amounting to a total fine of Rs 16.95 lakh. After pronouncement of judgment, the convicts were sent to the Central Prison in Visakhapatnam.

The CBI registered the case on March 28, 2013, alleging that the three had hatched a criminal conspiracy to cheat the postal department and depositors.

The CBI said the recurring deposit (RD) amounts received through the agents collected from depositors under Mahila Pradhan Kshetriya Bachat Yojana (MPKBY) from October 21, 2009, to September 29, 2012, had not been entered in the accounts of post office. A total of Rs 30.56 lakh of the depositors in 153 RD accounts were misappropriated. A chargesheet was filed on April 25, 2014.
