Vijayawada: Fisheries minister Kinjarapu Atchannaidu underscored the significance of World Fisheries Day, observed annually on November 21, to address challenges in the fishing sector. Speaking at an event at Tummalapally Kala Kshetra, he highlighted Andhra Pradesh’s vital contribution to India’s seafood production, noting the state produces over 75% of the country's cultured shrimp.

The minister proposed establishing fish landing centres every 30 kilometres, inspired by Kerala’s jetties, to aid fishermen. He praised the efforts of former chief minister late N.T. Rama Rao and current Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu for their support of fishermen through financial aid and policy measures. Criticising the previous administration for neglecting the community, he noted that the current government cleared arrears of ₹3.5 crore and released ₹34 crore for diesel subsidies. Transponders installed on 4,500 boats are helping fishermen locate fish and monitor weather conditions.
Excise minister Kollu Ravindra emphasised the importance of promoting schemes for fishermen, many of which remain underutilised. He highlighted the allocation of `750 crore for fishermen, including stipends during fishing bans. Electricity subsidies for all fishermen and financial support of ₹5 lakh to families of fishermen killed at sea further demonstrate the government’s commitment to their welfare.
