Vijayawada: Congress leader Kolanukonda Shivaji on Sunday advised the Andhra Pradesh government to set up a body like HYDRAA which demolishes buildings on encroached land in Telangana.

Addressing a press meet at the Andhra Ratna Bhavan in Vijayawada on Sunday, Shivaji said a body like Hyderabad Disaster Response and Asset Monitoring and Protection Agency (HYDRAA) would help the AP government to reclaim encroached land and create infrastructure to fight flooding.

"The Andhra Pradesh government should follow suit and demolish illegal structures built on encroached irrigation lands, endowment lands and water bodies in Vijayawada and the Capital Region Development Authority (CRDA) area," he said.

Shivaji pointed out that low-lying areas in Vijyawada were flooding after little rain due to improper drainage.

The AP Congress vice-president explained that encroachers have occupied the Budameru Canal and constructed houses, resulting in excess water from the canal flooding nearby areas.

This situation is further complicated by the difficulty in relocating thousands of people living along the canal to relief centres.

He emphasised that the government should take strict action against those who have illegally constructed buildings on canal embankments and irrigation lands, in violation of coastal regulatory zone norms.

Shivaji pointed out that sand mining is rampant on the reserve forest lands in areas such as Kolleru Lake, Kothuru Tadepalli, Adavinekkalam and Mylavaram and the government lacks an adequate system to address these violations.
