AP Reorganisation Act 2014 Brought Marquee Edu Institutes to AP

VISHAKHAPATNAM: The Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation Act 2014 is a significant legislation passed by Parliament. This Act divides the state of united Andhra Pradesh into two separate states: Telangana and Andhra Pradesh.

The Act designates Hyderabad as the common capital of both AP and Telangana for ten years. The central government promised to provide Andhra Pradesh with several national-level institutes in this Act. As per the split Act, the following eight national institutions are being set up in Andhra Pradesh: IIT (Indian Institute of Technology), NIT (National Institute of Technology), IIM (Indian Institute of Management), IISER (Indian Institutes of Science Education and Research) Central University, Petroleum University, Agricultural University, IIIT (Indian Institutes of Information Technology).
On July 19, 2022, the Union government announced that it had taken steps to establish educational institutions of national importance in the successor state of Andhra Pradesh as per the Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation Act, 2014.
Union Minister for Education Dharmendra Pradhan responded to questions raised by then-sitting MPs Pocha Brahmananda Reddy and Lavu Sri Krishna Devarayalu in the Lok Sabha regarding the steps taken to set up educational institutions of national importance in the state as per the Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation Act, 2014. Minister Dharmendra Pradhan stated that eight national institutions, including IIT, NIT, IIM, IISER, Central University, Petroleum University, Agricultural University, and IIIT, are being established in the AP State.
Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Tirupati, started functioning in 2015-16, and the National Institute of Technology (NIT), Tadepalligudem, also started functioning in 2015. In 2015-16, the Indian Institute of Management (IIM), Visakhapatnam, started functioning, while in the same academic year, the Indian Institute of Science Education and Research (IISER), Tirupati, began. In 2018-19, the Central University in Anantapur started functioning, and* the Indian Institute of Petroleum and Energy, Visakhapatnam, has been functioning from 2016-17. Apart from these educational institutes, the central government established the Central Tribal University of Andhra Pradesh (CTUAP) under the thirteenth schedule of the Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation Act, 2014.
CTUAP is located in Marrivalasa, Vizianagaram district and started in 2021. It operates from a transit campus, and its final location is yet to be finalised. In the agricultural sector, Acharya NG Ranga Agricultural University (ANGRAU) started in Guntur in 2014. ANGRAU was fully established with headquarters, colleges, institutional facilities and ANGRAU has been accredited by the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR).
The Indian Institute of Information Technology Design and Manufacturing in Kurnool started functioning in 2015-16.
Under the Andhra Pradesh Reorganization Act 2014, the National Institute of Disaster Management (NIDM) established its southern campus in Krishna district of Andhra Pradesh. The NIDM Southern Campus was inaugurated by then Vice President of India, M Venkaiah Naidu and is expected to be operational by March 2024.
