Vijayawada: Vijayawada Municipal Corporation (VMC) commissioner Swapnil Dinkar Pundkar on Friday ordered suspension of a sanitary secretary and issued show cause notices to another sanitary inspector and an assistant engineer for being negligent in their duties.

The VMC chief, along with civic officials, had been inspecting storm water drains at the Benz Circle. He found optical fibre cables, plastic bottles, clothes, slippers and other waste blocking the free flow of rainwater in the drain canals. He also found rainwater stagnating on the roads, causing traffic jams.
This led to Swapnil taking action against the officials responsible.
He warned that strict action will be taken against hotels and restaurants that dispose of their waste into drain canals. He urged citizens not to litter side drain canals, as that would lead to blockages.
The VMC chief said they have taken up 52 works at a cost of ₹2.93 crore to ensure that city roads are free of stagnant water. He directed officials to complete desilting of drains by the month end.
