ASI Suspended for Dereliction of Duty in Tirupati
Tirupati: An assistant sub-inspector (ASI) in Tirupati district has been suspended for negligence in handling a complaint. N. Shanmugam, ASI-2810 of Varadaiahpalem Police Station, was suspended on Thursday by district superintendent of police (SP) L. Subba Rayudu, following an incident that occurred on Sunday night.
According to official reports, two individuals from Indira Nagar in Varadaiahpalem were involved in an altercation on August 18 at approximately 10.45 pm. The victim arrived at the police station around 11.00 pm to file a complaint, bearing visible injuries from the fight.
The on-duty sentry constable informed ASI Shanmugam about the situation via phone. However, Shanmugam allegedly instructed the victim to return the following morning to file the complaint, failing to take immediate action or inform higher authorities about the incident.
The SP’s office received a complaint about the ASI’s conduct, prompting an internal investigation. The inquiry found that Shanmugam had failed in his duty by not accepting the complaint, neglecting to conduct an immediate investigation, and displaying a lack of empathy in performing his duty.
The SP stated that the department would not tolerate behaviour that erodes public trust. He said discipline and accountability were paramount in the police force. He issued a stern warning to all police personnel, stating “Officers must abandon negligent attitudes and perform their duties responsibly, or face severe consequences.”
