Vijayawada: Agriculture minister K. Atchannaidu directed officials to assess the extent of crop damage following the incessant rainfall throughout the state. He asked them to take steps to minimise the extent of damage.

The minister’s instructions came following a meeting he held with officials from agriculture, animal husbandry and fisheries departments here on Sunday. He wanted drains and stagnant water cleared to save crops.

Based on a preliminary report on the death of animals due to heavy rains resulting floods, officials informed the minister that 14 buffaloes and cows, 5,000 hens, and four sheep and goats had died.

Fisheries officials informed Atchannaidu that inland tanks and fishing nets had been damaged in Eluru and Palnadu districts. They said as a precautionary measure, 29,259 fishing boats had remained on shore without venturing into the sea in the wake of heavy rains.

The minister asked officials to continue monitoring the situation until it turns normal.
