Anantapur: In the wake of unruly scenes created by unauthorized hawkers in Tirumala temple town, TTD authorities started action against illegal settlements in the hill town. The Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD) vigilance and security wing, along with local police, conducted raids on 70 unauthorised shelter sheds on Sunday.
TTD vigilance general officer (VGO) Surendra led a team in targeting areas around Balaji Nagar and the outer ring road of Tirumala. The raids revealed that these makeshift dwellings were occupied by a mix of authorised and unauthorised individuals.
Surprisingly, many inhabitants were identified as daily wage labourers originally hired by a contractor for various civil engineering projects in Tirumala. Despite completion of projects and departure of the contractor, workers continued to reside in the temporary shelters. Even more puzzling was the discovery that some of these illegal residents commute daily to Tirupati for piecemeal work and return to Tirumala each night.
VGO Surendra said he plans to evict the occupants of the unauthorised shelters in a couple of days. He also said efforts would continue to remove unauthorised hawkers from other areas of the hill town.
The move came a day after unauthorised hawkers attacked people with water bottles disrupting peace in Tirumala.
